The Australian media watchdog, ACMA, is taking a hard line against illicit internet wagering. They are pursuing websites that advertise and steer Australians towards online casinos, including those polished review platforms that frequently appear.
This is significant because it marks the first instance of the ACMA requesting assistance from Australian internet service providers in this battle. Essentially, they are stating, “These platforms are promoting detrimental material, and we require your help to restrict access to them.”
Among the websites facing potential blocking are Aussie Casino Hex, Australia OK Casinos, and Aussie Online Pokies – names that might ring a bell if you’ve ever searched for gambling choices online.
Fiona Cameron, an ACMA member, emphasized that this initiative aims to safeguard Australians, particularly those susceptible to gambling dependence. These unauthorized sites often exploit individuals with deceptive promises of rewards and employ forceful strategies to maintain their gambling activity.
This action expands upon the ACMA’s strengthened authority granted in 2017, and it’s evident that they are committed to curbing unlawful online gambling.
The initiatives led to the suspension of 279 unlawful wagering platforms and the closure of 144 associated operations throughout the country. Furthermore, these measures contributed to a remarkable 95% decrease in visits to the ten most popular formerly reachable betting sites.
